Earthquake in China, August 2017

August 2017, an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the Jiuzhaigou area in the Sichuan Province of China. Aftershocks rattled through the area, with neighbouring provinces also feeling tremors. Sadly 19 people died and more than 200 were injured.

The IHG Foundation made a grant to the Sichuan Province Foundation for Poverty Alleviation to support disaster response efforts. Funding was used to purchase electricity generators to support electricity recovery for vital establishments, such as hospitals and schools. The local Red Cross also deployed emergency response teams and specialists to assist the impacted communities, including the distribution of relief supplies.
